Yoga Poses For Heartburn ReliefHeartburn is a burning sensation in the chest or throat. It occurs when the gastric acid in the stomach backs up in the food pipe. Food pipe or esophagus carries food from the mouth to stomach.

Heartburn should not be ignored. Neglecting it and taking no action against it can lead to the disease Gastro esophageal Reflux disease (GERD). Along with taking medicines and following a healthy diet, practicing yoga would relieve you from heartburn.

Some of the yoga poses to provide relief from heartburn

Yoga can help in relieving you from heartburn. Yoga postures like, Sukhasana or easy pose helps to straighten the spine and to maintain the metabolic rate. It is also an excellent form of relaxation. These yoga postures help in making the digestive system stronger and provide relief from heartburn.

Some of the yoga postures helpful in providing relief from heartburn are described below:

Warrior I or Virabhadrasana I

To start with, stand straight with your feet joined together. Now, put your left foot forward. Both your legs should not bend and should be straight. Your body should be facing forward. Now, join both your hands to form a circle above your head. Now, tilt your head and look at your hands which are joined. Take deep breaths. Continue this for about 1 minute. Repeat this for 3-5 times.

Sukhasana or easy pose

Sit straight. Cross your legs and sit such that your left foot is below your right knee and your right foot is below left knee. Place your hands on your knees. Now straighten your back. Take a deep breath through your nose and then hold your breath for a few seconds and then exhale. This is an easy and effective technique.

Bidalasana or cat pose

Sit while balancing your weight on your hands and knees.  Press your palms on the floor. Look towards the ground and focus on the ground between your hands. Now, inhale so that the chest expands and then exhale. Repeat this for 3-5 times. This position resembles that of a cat so it is named as cat pose.

Viparita Karani or Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose:

Lie on your back such that your toes are facing the wall. Now, slowly bring your legs on the wall. Your body should now resemble ‘L’ shape. Rest your back and neck on the ground fully. Place your hands on your side and fold your elbows. Your palms should be facing the ceiling. Your fingers should be pointing to the opposite direction to that of the wall on which your legs are placed. Your hands should resemble a ‘T’ shape. Stay in this pose for 5 minutes.

Making a change in your diet is also necessary. Include vegetables like, cabbage, peas and carrot in your diet. Eat bananas and apples. Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol as much as you can.

Simply knowing about these yoga poses would not help, start practicing these to gain the benefits.
